Challenge

PCL is a group of independent construction companies that carries out work across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, and in Australia. These diverse operations in the civil infrastructure, heavy industrial, and buildings markets are supported by a strategic presence in 31 major centers. PCL employs more than 4,000 full-time professional and administrative salaried staff and more than 7,500 hourly tradespeople.

In a company this size, business optimization in Human Resources is of utmost importance. Between vacation planning, on-boarding new hires and off-boarding current employees, the Human Resources team at PCL was struggling to keep up with the paper-work. Originally focusing on transforming a vacation planning InfoPath system into a more efficient SharePoint application, it became clear that we could extend the solution to more Human Resource aspects at PCL.


Solution

Working with PCL, DevFacto created a suite of Human Resource applications within Microsoft SharePoint called CareerQUEST. This solution originally focused on converting a vacation planning InfoPath program into a more efficient and streamlined vacation planning SharePoint application. Transitioning to an automated and paperless system increased efficiency in the Human Resources department and had an immediate impact on workflow at PCL. It was determined that a similar solution could be translated to other areas of the department and thus, CareerQUEST was created.

CareerQUEST also incorporated tools for on-boarding new hires such as automatically sending required information to various systems via electronic documentation, thus increasing efficiency and decreasing chance of human error.

In addition, CareerQUEST provided PCL with the ability to safely store secured documents and access them whilst complying with pre-determined accessibility regulations.

The CareerQUEST Application has empowered PCL to:

  • Improve Document Security - Provide safe storage of secured documents and comply with document accessibility regulations
  • Improve Human Resources - Reduce the overall workload of Human Resource functions
